Unlocking the Creative Potential of Recording Studio Effects

Of the many audio engineering books I have encountered, Sound FX stands out in several distinct ways.

The Book is incredibly thorough and detailed. After covering the basic function of each studio effect, Sound FX goes on to describe many different uses that each effect can serve. For example at the end of the chapter on compression (page 163), nine different goals that compression can accomplish are listed. Over the course of the chapter, compression has been analyzed so thoroughly that you will understand how and to achieve each one of these nine desired effects and why and when you would want to.

Why would an engineer pick one compressor over another? There are several paragraphs outlining characteristics that change from model to model. Knowing what to listen for helped cue me on to some subtle differences that I had previously not heard. Sound FX is filled with details like this about every effect that mixing engineers use. Other studio effects are described just as carefully. (EQ, expansion, gating, reverb delay, pitch shifting, distortion, and so on)

Have you ever listened to a compressed track, and cranked the compressor's release time from as low as possible to as high as possible and not hear the difference? Sound FX explains what you need to listen for. Have you tried adjusting the "room size" on a reverb unit and not heard the difference? Again Sound FX explains what this means and what the sonic results are.

While engineers working on material that is not musical may find valuable information here, the book is primarily about working with music. A fair amount of technical information is presented, but the material always circles back to how the technology can be used to accomplish musical tasks.

It's taken me time to learn what effects are needed to to find the sound I want to hear. Understanding the complexity of what each effect has to offer and knowing what to listen for when I adjust parameters has drastically improved my mixes. The authors experience and meticulous attention to detail comes through here and analyzes the material more effectively than any other source I have encountered. After reading, I'm always left with a powerful urge to rush to the studio and put the material to use.

The Well Tempered Engineer

Sound FX is a comprehensive, beautifully laid out resource for all levels of recording engineers. Professor Case has found a way of re-examining the tried and true building blocks of music production that imparts new perspectives while covering fundamental topics. The book aims to empower engineers to understand the science behind the tools of the control room in order to inspire greater creativity within their recordings. Many of the described effects utilize tools found in most studios, but in a way that will be new to many of the readers, even those working in major recording studios. Musical references have been included so that the reader seek out discussed effects first hand.

Perhaps the greatest asset of Sound FX is the manner by which the material is presented; Alex Case has included a light hearted, witty narrative that makes the reading experience a breeze regardless of the material.

As is probably true of many audio people, I own several books covering various topics in recording but none that are as insightful and as inpiring as this one; highly recommended!

Excellent Resource

I've had the benefit of taking courses from the author prior to this book being published. As a result I know his teaching style. The author's style and voice comes through loud and clear in the text. It's enjoyable to read while you're learning some rather complex subjects.

Coming from a non engineering background I find the explanations of concepts clear and the graphics used to illustrate the concepts extremely helpful. This text will be useful for those wishing to learn more about the science behind the art.

If you want to know things like how to add a touch of reverb to make a voice pop through a music bed without having to simply lower the volume of the music; this book will show you how to do that and other production techniques in a way a non-techie will understand. It will also explain 'why' it works.

Having said that, this is not a "Sound Effects for Dummies" book either. This book goes in-depth. It will benefit those who have a technical/engineering background and are more "into the math" of sound and acoustics as well.

Access to the website with audio examples and the samples that are used to further illustrate the concepts is an invaluable resource that obviously took time to compile.

Investing the $39.95 for the knowledge "Sound FX" contains is a "no brainer" for anyone seriously interested in learning more about the science of sound and sound design.

About the Author
Mark Sagoff is Interim Director and Senior Research Scholar at the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy in the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park. The author of Price, Principle and the Environment (2004), he has published widely in journals of law, philosophy, and the environment. Dr Sagoff was named a Pew Scholar in Conservation and the Environment in 1991 and was a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in 1998. He is also a fellow of the Hastings Center and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Critique of cost-benefit analysis for environmental matters

Prof. Sagoff demonstrates the problematic nature of an economic approach to environmental decisionmaking. Even granting that we could quantify environmental values in dollar terms, he raises the important question of why we would want to do such a thing. The author argues that questions of balancing environmental values against other "goods" should be decided in the public political arena, and not by reference to people's private willingness to pay. Somewhat puzzling is Sagoff's adherence to a utilitarian philosophy; I'm still waiting for someone to point out the obvious liberty and distributive-justice problems with cost-benefit analysis in the sphere of environmental regulation.

In The Economy of the Earth: Philosophy, Law, and the Environment (New York: Cambridge University Press, c. 1988), Mark Sagoff urges us to develop stronger ethical and legal norms os as to preserve the environment through social regulation. Taking issue with those who would reduce all environmental issues to economics and its concern for commodities and profit/loss data, he argues "that these problems are primarily moral, aesthetic, cultural, and political and that they must be ad¬dressed in those terms" (p. 6). Those who mindlessly espouse the notion that "you can't legislate morality" might as well close Sagoff's book at page six, for that's exactly what he thinks we must do! Central to his endeavor is the task of dislodging "cost-benefit analysis" from the center of policy-making, law-shaping endeavors. Surely there are goods and services, entities and experiences, which cannot be measured by or reduced to dollars and cents! And surely such things have intrinsic worth which transcends personal preferences. To establish moral and legal weight for intangibles such as community bonds or scenic beauties, and to discover objective criteria for allegedly subjective moral judgments, is Sagoff's task.
He does so, in part, because once "we accept the theory that values are subjective, that they are just 'wants,' we must also accept the idea that managers--whether they be therapists, lawyers, or cost-benefit analysts--are in the best position to handle them for us. We must also accept the idea that we all want the same thing, namely, the satisfaction of as many preferences as possible, taking their intensity into account" (p. 48). Sagoff rejects such utilitarianism because it so easily allows the welfare state to function with little regard for anything but physiological/economic concerns. "We cannot permit welfare economics to replace the moral function of public law. The antinomianism of cost-benefit analysis is not enough" (p. 49).
There is, in fact, an important difference between preferences and judgments. To reduce moral judgments to economic preferences renders one (whether as a person or as a society) incapable of making decisions in accord with what should be done, whether or not it gives me (or us) pleasure. Natural "resources" such as timber have too frequently been parceled out unwisely, satisfying certain persons' or corporations' desires but illustrating poor long-range judgment. Allowing the "bottom line" to dictate environmental policies, ignoring the fact that precious scenes or wildlife or pure water have worth and dignity which cannot be reduced to money, forces us to forego making genuinely moral judgments.
Conversely, when environmentalists champion wilderness preservation, they argue for its "cul¬tural importance and symbolic meaning," articulating "a conviction and not a desire" (p. 94). Sagoff strongly emphasizes the importance of this distinction. Some things are clearly right, other things clearly wrong. He cites a New Yorker car¬toon which shows Satan welcoming entrants to hell with these words: "You'll find there's no 'right' or 'wrong' here, just what works for you" (p. 99). What we must recover, if we're to stop earth's destruction, is a clear consciousness of absolutes--some things are simply wrong! Beliefs, convic¬tions, need neither be reduced to nor confused with subjective preferences.
In a chapter entitled "nature and the national idea," Sagoff reflects upon the nation's history. The Pilgrims and Puritans, with few exceptions, saw the wilderness as a foe, something to be conquered. In the words of Michael Wigglesworth, creation was a "Devil's den": "A waste and howling wilderness / Where none inhabited / / But hellish fiends and brutish men / That devils worshiped" (p. 125). Such comments prodded Perry Miller, the great historian, to say "'that the founders had no qualms about doing harm to nature by thrusting civiliza¬tion upon it.'" Indeed, "'They reasoned in terms of wealth, comfort, amenities, power, in terms which we may conveniently call, though they had not been derived from Bentham, "utilitarian"'" (p. 126).
Yet, alongside this utilitarian tradition has grown a quite different perspective, evident as early as Jonathan Edwards, who saw nature suffused with poetic symbols of God. Religious thinkers like Edwards, plus an assortment of literary figures, have espoused a "covenant" relationship with creation. In Sagoff's opinion: "The covenant we have made with nature, which is as much an obligation to use well our natural environment as to protect it--and, in any case, not to destroy it wantonly or in a wasteful manner--historically had religious rather than economic or even literary and artistic origins. Ever since Edwards in The Nature of True Virtue, published together with his Dissertation in 1755, defined true virtue as 'benevolence' or 'love for being in general' and distinguished it sharply from love or benevolence for the things that per¬tain to oneself, including beauty, family, country and the like, we have been found to recognize that our virtue as a people depends to a large extent on our benevolence toward our natural environment" (p. 141). Could we but make central, rather than peripheral, the "love for being in general" Edwards espoused, we could establish a basis for environmental ethics and law. At the moment, given the state of American jurisprudence, where everyone's "rights" must be given an equal hearing if not absolute protection, where "rights" reflect personal preferences rather than perspicacious judgments or prudence, there's little hope for environmental polic¬ies which elicit widespread, lasting support.
Though Sagoff writes clearly enough for non-philosophers and non-lawyers to follow his argument, The Economy of the Earth addresses more of a select, scholarly community than the public at large. The book is carefully argued, factually precise, full of references to important court decisions as well as philosophical argument. Those of us interested in social and political thought, those of us concerned with public policy, will share one reviewer's judgment: "His book serves as an outstanding example of how applied philosophy should be done, and it should be compulsory reading for every economist working in the field of public policy" (The Times Higher Education Supplement).

The New and the Old Sagoff

Potential customers should note that The Economy of the Earth was released in an extensively revised second edition in 2008. When I checked the Amazon site in September, they were selling the first edition as a hardback and the second as paper. Both editions are worth reading. The first edition contains discussions of property rights and environmental politics dropped from the new edition, while the new edition includes discussions on ecosystem services, consumption and conservation science not included in the first.

A new handbook for M&A professionals

As a detailed discussion of valuation in the M&A context, this book is a gem. It summarizes the various approaches, and the chapter on the M&A process is correct and adequately detailed. The links to online models were especially helpful, and we are making this book required reading for new analysts at our boutique M&A shop.

For those interested in understanding the theory behind valuation, Aswath Damodaran, "Investment Valuation" still has first place. And for those who need to value non-standard assets (oil & gas, real estate, insurance companies) Jeffrey Hooke, "Security Analysis on Wall Street" remains essential.

Valuation from a Practical, M&A Point of View

If you want to learn how academics think valuation should be done, read Damodaran's "Investment Valuation". If you want to know how valuation is carried out in practice in the M&A market, read this excelent book (don't misunderstand me, Damodaran's book is also very good).

This is an excellent book on the heart of investment banking. There are many fun books that introduce the worlds of investment banking, what it is, what they do, etc. Once one has learned about the basics of the industry, the next step is to master the technical skill set, or the art, or financial modeling and analysis. Everything that bankers do is grounded in valuation theory and corporate finance. These are the hard skill sets that are not taught in either undergraduate curriculum or even graduate school, regardless of if you go to HBS or MIT or INSEAD. Coincidentally, most of the end users of such books on modeling and valuation are the very same students that attend the like of Wharton that aspire to become senior career bankers.

When I first got into this world there were no books on the subject (roughly back in the early 90s). Now with this one book anyone aspiring to be a world class technical banker can acquire the skills thru self study. I have also used the same financial modeling vendors that the actual banks use to train new Analysts and Associates. This one book is an excellent addition to the limited literature on self-study financial modeling and analysis done, which is the core transferable skill set at the junior banker level. The heart of modeling is what helps departing Analysts transition to buy side positions such as hedge funds, mutual funds, buy-side research, endowments, and other institutional investors.

This book is perfect for the completely uninitiated. Whereas I had already had an extensive background in the subject, I honestly feel this is the perfect unassuming intro for all the liberal arts majors that want to experience life in high finance. Literally everyone agrees that mastering banking is a "craft" and apprenticeship business in which the senior most banker passed on his expertise and judgement to the junior resources. However, books such this one allow enterprising junior resources to master most of the technical, hard skill aspects of the job without spending 3 years as an Analyst or Associate. Nothing beats actual deal experience, but this book makes the learning curve much less step in a very intimidating and challenging industry for new hires.

On a final note, this book is technical enough that someone with a very extensive background can still benefit from the material. Despite having been self taught most of the valuation methods and mastering them, this book single handedly is my reference in actual consulting projects that I do in my part time. I would refer this book to any undergraduate, MBA student, newly minted M&A lawyer, accountant, corporate development professional, or anyone else because the essential skill set of financial modeling and valuation theory is at the heart of all these disparate types of positions.

With this one book I can mentor all my friend that are majoring in finance and teach them what took me years to learn piece meal when such information was non-existent and extremely proprietary and difficult to come by.

Very difficult to understand

The author has good mathematics, but not the abilities to explain something clearly to a student or a beginner. I need to buy another book.

Digital version a pain. errors. unapproachable.

I bought this without reading the fine print (shame on me). Apparently, the "kindle" version doesn't actually work on the Kindle. Nor does it work on any android device except the Kindle Fire. It does say it works on "PC", by which it means Windows only... This is an unacceptable delivery method. It has a relatively large number of errors. The material is presented in an unapproachable way, such that it's probably most useful as a reference for someone who just needs a reminder of available techniques. I used this for a semester course in graduate computer vision. I'm also a math major, so my problem with the book is not a lack of proper background.

Difficult read

This book is the required textbook for a class. I ordered the 2nd edition after reading the poor reviews dating back to well before the second edition had been published. It was my hope that perhaps a major rewrite had occurred after that author absorbed the poor reviews. Sadly, that does not appear to be the case. I am just starting the class and have much of the book left to read, but the frustration felt by past reviewers is now clearly understood by me.

In general, the book tends to run both hot and cold. Clearly the authors are deeply knowledgeable about the subject. And there are many good sections of the book that do reasonable job of explaining the concepts. It is the sections that dive into the math where the authors tend to undermine their own hard work and that, I believe, are source of a number of the book's poor reviews.

One of the topics of the book is the classification (of images), so in keeping with this let me attempt to classify this book. This book seems to fall into the category of a book written by really smart people that loses more than it has to when read by a not-so-smart person. Said differently, this is probably a great book for those that already know the subject and the math. That is, the book can be quite readable for a few paragraphs and give the reader some intuition for the topic. However, when the book dives into the math for a few paragraphs and then emerges on the far shore, it has probably abandoned most readers. Certainly, more often than not it has abandoned me and, from the reviews, I believe that I am not the only one. I suspect the authors have majors in math, but perhaps they have been swimming in the math for so long that it has become comfortable. Whatever the reason, the authors do a poor job in setting up the math, are too dependent on concise math notation (again which would be well know to a math major but not necessarily by others) and as the math discussion progresses the authors make among the largest leaps mathematically among any textbook that I can recall. Additionally, the sections that discuss the math seem to be of varying quality. Often I would get the sense that what made it to final print were a set of notes or a rough draft that had not yet been completed let alone edited.

Regarding the poor setup and excessive brevity in a passage I just read, the authors describe an equation as having three terms, then they give the equation and never state which term is which. As the math unfolds, the reader is stuck because, although he can read the transformations relating to (for example) the rho term he does not know which term is represented by rho. The author also at points use what I find to be a somewhat odd notation (e.g., for linear algebra). In general a few examples would go a long way as well. The authors attempts at homogeneous coordinates and scale rotate and translate was awful and awfully short. A book that I have on motion in robotics spends perhaps 5 times as many pages to discuss a similar topic, with more examples and less dense notation, with the upshot being that the reader of the robotics book walks away having learned the concept and the Computer Vision reader walks away confused and having learned little (again, a math major might have been able to track better with the CV book and gotten a little more).

Were the authors to read this critique, they might counter that they were trying limit the math and instead to provide narratives that provide for an intuitive understanding of the subject. This would be a fair point and a worthy goal. When writing a book, the author must decide who his intended audience is; e.g., an undergraduate engineering student, a graduate student, academic colleagues, etc. However, if this was their intent then the approach the authors took was not unlike trying to meet a page count by removing every third word from the draft text.

In short, of what I have read so far, this book can only be followed without great struggle by those already familiar with the subject and the math. It has lots of potential, so I hope that the authors take the criticism in the constructive spirit in which it is offered with the result being a still better third edition.

Caryn Dellamorte Bing, RPh, MS, FASHP

Caryn is Senior Manager Clinical Services and PGY1 Residency Program Director for Critical Care Systems (CCS), Inc., a national home and specialty infusion provider. Her corporate responsibilities at CCS have included development of clinical standards of practice, clinician training and professional development, and leadership and management of CCS PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program at five locations. Caryn’s 30-year career includes corporate leadership, general management, operations, clinical management, accreditation surveyor, consulting, training, and pharmacy practice roles in home/specialty infusion and other alternate site and acute care practice settings. Caryn holds a BS from University of Illinois College of Pharmacy and MS in Health Systems Management from Rush University. She completed her pharmacy residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center. She is a Rho Chi Scholar and Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Caryn has been active in professional association leadership throughout her career, including terms as a presidential officer for the Illinois and Nevada ASHP state affiliates, and as an ASHP Delegate and Alternate Delegate numerous times. She served on the ASHP Home Care Section Executive Committee and was Chairperson for the ASHP Continuity of Care Task Force. Caryn received the first Distinguished Service Award from the ASHP Home Care Section. She served on editorial boards for AJHP, the Journal of Pharmacy Practice, and Perspectives in Pharmacy; has published a number of articles and book chapters; and has presented at many state and national meetings. Caryn has been Editor of Extended Stability for Parenteral Drugs since its inception.

Anna Nowobilski-Vasilios, Pharm.D., MBA, FASHP, CNSC, BSNCP

Anna is Principal at Anovation, Inc; a Surveyor for the Accreditation Commission for Health Care; and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Midwestern University. Her experience includes over 30 years in pharmacy and over 25 years in home infusion and specialty pharmacy services. She served Option Care for 14 years as Senior Vice President for Care Management Services, Residency Director, Continuing Education Administrator, Vice President of Clinical Services, Senior Director of Program Development, National Director of Pharmacy, and Director of Franchise Implementation. She also held management and clinical positions with other regional and national home infusion providers and in hospital pharmacy practice. She holds a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Illinois, a MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management and a PharmD from Midwestern University. She is a Rho Chi Scholar, board certified in nutrition support as well as nutrition support pharmacy, and a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists; she has served as Director-At-Large for ASHP’s Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners.

She is an active member in the National Home Infusion Association, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Infusion Nurses Society, the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists, and the Polish American Pharmacists’ Association. Anna has delivered numerous presentations, and she has published articles on the subjects of home infusion therapy, specialty pharmacy, nutrition support, new drug approvals, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

She is the author of the Home Infusion Chapter within the 22nd edition of Remington: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy and has been a contributing writer to each edition of Extended Stability for Parenteral Drugs.

Great book!!

I bought this book because my course's book was so bad. I am glad I did. This book is beautiful, and explains everything with great detail in a clear and concise manner. If you are interested in parallel computing, this book is a must! Helpful graphs and figures are plentiful, and the book handles most of the industry's standards in parallel programming (pthreads, open_mpi, java threads, etc).
