Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (Metropolitan Museum of Art), by Andrew Bolton

Arguably the most influential, imaginative, and provocative designer of his generation, Alexander McQueen both challenged and expanded fashion conventions to express ideas about race, class, sexuality, religion, and the environment.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty examines the full breadth of the designer’s career, from the start of his fledgling label to the triumphs of his own world-renowned London house. It features his most iconic and radical designs, revealing how McQueen adapted and combined the fundamentals of Savile Row tailoring, the specialized techniques of haute couture, and technological innovation to achieve his distinctive aesthetic. It also focuses on the highly sophisticated narrative structures underpinning his collections and extravagant runway presentations, with their echoes of avant-garde installation and performance art.

Published to coincide with an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art organized by The Costume Institute, this stunning book includes a preface by Andrew Bolton; an introduction by Susannah Frankel; an interview by Tim Blanks with Sarah Burton, creative director of the house of Alexander McQueen; illuminating quotes from the designer himself; provocative and captivating new photography by renowned photographer Sølve Sundsbø; and a lenticular cover by Gary James McQueen.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty celebrates the astounding creativity and originality of a designer who relentlessly questioned and confronted the requisites of fashion.

a memory to never forget
By C. Leneus
I visited the except twice, he was just amazing and now this true creater is in a time capsule, he remains in a stand still to those who glored his work in heart which we may not ever experience again only just to look back and remember. I thank God for McQueen for aspiring others including myself to experience a chance to take the lep in making risks and just not giving a dame about what anyone say just do it and take it. McQueen's work touched everyone especially me. This is a most fantastic book, its amazing how they can make a cove that fits who McQueen was, if he was still alive or if he came in spirit which I think that would be asum he would be very please but may not show it just one little smirk than vape away, that would be a world :-). Only reason I wanted this book just in case no body else have I could one day be the only person who does, I looked into the pages ones then I sealed it back in again until it is ready to be opened again which maybe not any time soon, its a book in it greatest work I will only cherish.

If you're a McQueen fan...
By GMun
... BUY THIS BOOK! This book serves as a wonderful compendium of McQueen's work. The collections noted range from "Jack the ripper stalks his victims" through "Angels and Demons". If I were to nit-pick: A - some of the photos could have benefited from better lighting and B - there needed to be more examples from his tenure at Givenchy. Not all of his collections are on display at the Met exhibit and so in this book, not all of his collections are used (Neptune, Pantheon Ad Lectum, etc.). I have not finished reading the passages in the forward, nor the interview with Sara Burton, but this book is more of a visual feast than a good read. The size is comparable to the price and the quality of the book is excellent. I'm still waiting for a giant 1,000 page book on his entire career, but in the mean time, this catalog will suffice nicely!

An homage to genius...
By De Faust
When McQueen died, there seemed to be hole in fashion. One of the greatest creative minds had simply vanished and it felt like we had lost years of future innovation. Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty reminds us that although the man has past, his efforts and influence on sartorial innovation never will.

I read this entire tome in a single day. And having read it, I feel much more connected to McQueen than ever before. It is a publication that not only chronicles his life but, explores his processes, his techniques, his innovation and of course, his legacy.

And despite the collection of quotes, deep biographical writings and insight, this book is not so much about the words but, the images. The Met have captured the true essence of McQueen through visual displays of his aesthetic and mindset. From flowing gowns that look ethereal across a double page spread, to the finest detail of a mannequin's skin tone, it all resembles a dream, the surreal fantasy that McQueen bought the world.

This book, with its comprehensive look at the past and optimistic and exciting look into McQueen's future through Sarah Burton, is something you must really buy for yourself. I cannot be in New York for the exhibition but, have a little piece of the real McQueen with me. And my never ending admiration for him is enhanced through this book.

A great homage to the genius that was and ever will be, McQueen.

From the Author
When people ask me how I became interested in succulents, I tell them I toured an amazing succulent garden on assignment for the San Diego Union-Tribune. Horticulturist Patrick Anderson and his aloe garden opened my eyes to the beauty of succulents and their potential in garden design.
Yet even as I say this, around the edges of my awareness floats a much earlier memory. I was eight or nine years old when I went with my mother to a home in a wealthy community for an occasion I don't remember. When we returned home, my mother described the house to my father: "Big picture windows, but imagine having to clean them. Views of the golf course, but the property is too steep. Surrounded by trees, but they shed leaves and bark. Big deck off the living room, but no garden."
No garden? There had been an astonishing one, in pots on the deck, with plants unlike any I'd seen before. They looked like eels, starfish, and coral. One was a perfect little sphere with a green-and-maroon herringbone pattern. Others were necklaces of blue-gray buttons, rubbery silver-blue roses, and sticks of green chalk with windowed tips.
My mother concluded wistfully, "Maybe someday Debbie will have a house like that."
Why would I want it, I wondered, if it came with dirty windows, messy trees, and near-vertical land? On the other hand, who wouldn't want that deck garden? It became something I longed for, along with a saltwater aquarium, a hot air balloon, and an unlimited supply of chocolate marshmallows.
I no longer want any of those, but succulents continue to seduce me. I'm that little girl again when I see a succulent I haven't seen before, or even a well-grown one I may have seen dozens of times. You might assume I have a vast collection, and although I do own dozens of varieties, I don't consider myself a collector. Fascination need not be possession. I'm equally happy looking at succulents in a nursery, at a show, or in someone else's garden. In particular, I enjoy capturing and recording succulents' myriad shapes and textures with my camera.
For most of my career, I've written about all sorts of plants. Words are still my first love, but nothing describes a plant or a garden as well as a photo. As I practice this art form, I often think of how "photography" means "writing with light." Camera in hand, I circle a succulent, looking for the best light. In slanted early morning or late afternoon sun, red margins burn neon bright, spines incandesce, fuzzy filaments shimmer, and leaves reveal glowing hues of rose, orange, purple, and blue. As you might imagine, it was difficult to winnow the selection of photos for my books. So many have merit, or illustrate an important point, and I was continually thinking, "But I have to show them this one!"
Succulents Simplified, my third book about succulents, is a kind of prequel to the previous two. It's a guide for novice enthusiasts, a quick reference for anyone seeking an overview, and a vehicle for presenting design ideas I'm excited about. Throughout, I share my perspective on a subject that has become my passion.

From the Inside Flap
Sculptural, geometric succulents come in every color, including yellow, blue, and a crimson so dark it's almost black. There are sedums as dainty as sea foam, fuzzy kalanchoes, rotund euphorbias, and frilly echeverias, to name but a few. And because they come from the earth's most challenging habitats, succulents suit all manner of gardens and lifestyles, thriving in garden designs that are just not possible with other plants.
Whether you're a novice or a veteran, have an acre to fill or a few pots, live in Calexico or Canada, let the popular author of Designing with Succulents and Succulent Container Gardens demystify these low-water beauties. Debra Lee Baldwin writes from experience, with wisdom and humor, so that your own adventures with succulents will be enjoyable and rewarding.

The book I've been waiting for: gorgeous DIY, covered in photos, lots of easy tips and bullet points
By Gen of North Coast Gardening
If you've been around the world of horticulture for any time, you're probably familiar with Debra Lee Baldwin's work with succulents. Her first two books, Designing with Succulents and Succulent Container Gardens, are still the most thoughtful, in-depth guides to those topics available. However, both of those books have so much information that you could say they are aimed more towards a deeply passionate hobbyist or a professional like myself, rather than the casual gardener.

In certain situations, I think it can be even more helpful to have a simpler reference which condenses the most actionable information available into one easy-to-use guide. That's where Debra's new book, Succulents Simplified, comes in.

Succulents Simplified has three sections:
· How to grow and design with succulents successfully
· How-to projects that showcase succulents
· Debra's top 100 easy-care succulents

Even though I'm a landscaping professional, I'm definitely no succulent expert, so having Debra's keep-it-simple tips for how to succeed with them are incredibly useful to me. She goes over everything from creating designs using the varied shapes, colors and textures of succulents, choosing the right location so they'll succeed, and the right way of maintaining these plants so they continue looking fresh. The information is presented in a clean, easy-to-peruse format with a lot of bullet points and lists making it easy to find the information you're looking for.

Then, the second section has eight gorgeous DIY projects to get you more enthused and involved in the succulent world, with each section having multiple pages of detailed how-to photos and instructions. Want to grow succulents in a low light situation? Create one of those living picture vertical gardens you keep seeing in the magazines? What about a succulent-topped pumpkin to sit by your front door as autumn decor? She even goes into how to make succulent bouquets for special occasions, such as a wedding. What I love best about this section is that Debra gives us the tools to create our own projects from her instructions - not only is there endless variety in terms of which succulents you choose, but each project has huge potential for you to personalize it and make it your own in other ways.

Though the first two sections are the most immediately exciting, I suspect the third section, 100 Easy-Care Succulents, will actually get the most use from me after I learn from the first section and do a few of the projects in the second. I confess that when I go to the nursery, I feel a hint of trepidation when I try to choose which succulents to use in my container planting projects.

Debra demystifies the hardiness, habits, and best uses for each of the 100 succulents featured. This is exactly what I have needed all these years - a pictorial guide to some of the most common and useful succulents out there. With Debra's help, I feel like I'm finally learning to identify and understand Kalanchoes, Graptoverias and the rest. The only thing that could be better is if Debra would also release an app that I could take along with me to the garden center!

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the quality of the photographs in this book. Debra Lee Baldwin isn't just a writer; she's a noted photojournalist and took many of the pictures for this book herself. One of my main complaints about many recent releases in the horticultural book world is that the photos and the writing often don't seem to go together as smoothly as they could. Either the photographs are close-ups of plants and don't fully illustrate the design tips, or the pictures don't have a consistent style throughout the book. Because of Debra's skill at both writing and photography, her book is a shining example of all that print publishing can and should be doing to ensure that photos and text work seamlessly to enhance one another and the aims of the book. The book is packed full of photos, with multiple pictures illustrating each point or plant. I can't say enough about what a difference this makes to my enjoyment of the text.

Succulents Simplified is being marketed as a prequel to her other books, and I think that's completely accurate. I adore the in-depth information in her other two books and refer to them frequently, but I think the ease-of-use, inspirational photos and DIY projects, and the simple reference guide to the most common and noteworthy succulents is going to make this my favorite of the three to recommend people start with, because it has a little bit of everything you need, no matter how deep your interest in succulents.

One of the best succulent books in my collection
By garden chick
Succulents Simplified covers all aspects of succulent gardening, whether you grow them outdoors, in containers or use them for crafting projects. Despite the fact that I have been doing all of these things with succulents for the last four years, I often feel like I'm just winging it. This book is now my go-to source for caring for my existing collection as well as for choosing new varieties. The book goes well beyond listing solid, easy-care succulents choices (although it does that as well), and includes a range of essential information, such as how to refresh succulents in containers, companion plants, and a terrific "what's wrong with my succulent" Q and A. The format features breakout boxes, checklists, and detailed how-to photographs, making it easy for me to find answers to specific questions, or page through for design inspiration or a craft project to try. The format is particularly user-friendly. Any succulent lover will appreciate the wealth of information provided, but beginner and intermediate succulent gardeners will find it particularly helpful.

Best Entry Level Book on Succulent Gardening Available
By Patty - USA Scots Lass
Debra Lee Baldwin has hit a homerun again for succulent gardening. This time, Debra is targeting those really new to succulents and this book helps take the mystery out of learning how to garden successfully with succulents. Gorgeous photos, excellent descriptions and instructions. This is a wonderful complement to Debra's other two succulent books, "Succulent Container Gardens: Design Eye-Catching Displays with 350 Easy-Care Plants" and "Designing with Succulents", both previous books considered the top succulent gardening resource books on the market today. My books from Debra Lee Baldwin have earned a spot next to the "Sunset Western Garden Book" as my top 10 most valuable gardening resource books in my gardening library. This book will be one of my "go to" succulent books. Well done, Debra, another fantastic book. Will be on my holiday gift list to my fellow gardening friends and family!

Three Felonies A Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent, by Harvey Silverglate

The average professional in this country wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes home, eats dinner, and then goes to sleep, unaware that he or she has likely committed several federal crimes that day. Why? The answer lies in the very nature of modern federal criminal laws, which have exploded in number but also become impossibly broad and vague. In Three Felonies a Day, Harvey A. Silverglate reveals how federal criminal laws have become dangerously disconnected from the English common law tradition and how prosecutors can pin arguable federal crimes on any one of us, for even the most seemingly innocuous behavior. The volume of federal crimes in recent decades has increased well beyond the statute books and into the morass of the Code of Federal Regulations, handing federal prosecutors an additional trove of vague and exceedingly complex and technical prohibitions to stick on their hapless targets. The dangers spelled out in Three Felonies a Day do not apply solely to “white collar criminals,” state and local politicians, and professionals. No social class or profession is safe from this troubling form of social control by the executive branch, and nothing less than the integrity of our constitutional democracy hangs in the balance.

Excellent book, but unfortunately mistitled
By T. D. Welsh
The product description of this book on amazon.com (the US site) starts by claiming that "The average professional in this country wakes up in the morning, goes to work, comes home, eats dinner, and then goes to sleep, unaware that he or she has likely committed several federal crimes that day". So I was keen to find out what crimes these might be, that ordinary people were unconsciously committing in such profusion. Sadly, that is something you cannot learn by reading this book. As far as I can ascertain, there is literally no mention of "three crimes a day" or anything similar on any of its pages, from the foreword by Alan M Dershowitz to the index. The quotes published on the book's jacket are much more accurate: "Now comes veteran defense lawyer and civil libertarian Harvey A. Silverglate... exposing... a pattern of serious abuses and convictions of innocent people in some of the most famous (as well as obscure) federal cases of recent decades"... "...Silverglate has written a work peerless in revelations about the mad expansion of federal statutes whose result is to define, as criminal, practices no rational citizen would have viewed as illegal..."..."...federal prosecutors have conceived of something truly frightening - punishment without crime..."

Although the book is bound to disappoint anyone looking for a lurid expose of how no decent citizen is safe from the US justice system, it is a valuable and well-written critique of some recent trends in that system. In particular, Silverglate calls attention to Congress' habit of drafting and approving vague laws that can be interpreted in a wide variety of ways depending on the beliefs and attitudes of prosecutors, judges, and juries. He also denounces the growing tendency of prosecutors to intimidate defendants by a combination of vague charges and the threat of truly savage sentences, inducing them to plea bargain - being assured of a definite, relatively light sentence instead of a potentially crushing one. In return, the defendants are forced to testify against other, more important defendants, and so on indefinitely. It is well-known that 90% of criminal cases in the USA are already settled by plea bargain rather than by jury trial. The trouble is that there are so many laws, some of whose provisions are so vague and potentially all-encompassing, that prosecutors can threaten defendants by bringing forward lengthy indictments and calling for commensurately draconian sentences. Unsure of the outcome of a trial, the defendant usually agrees to "full cooperation" and thus becomes part of the prosecution team in its case against the next defendant. As an example of how easy it is to fall foul of federal laws, the author explains that Martha Stewart was imprisoned for five months, not for insider trading as commonly thought, but for making false statements to federal authorities and "a host of other obstruction crimes". In fact, she was never guilty of insider trading, as what she did was perfectly legal. Unfortunately for her, she was unsure of her ground, and so chose to lie to investigators. So she was imprisoned for that!

The Stewart case is a good example of another trend that Silverglate deplores: prosecutors who pick a famous individual or organization and devise plans to "take them down" by whatever means available, rather than (as they should) starting with a crime and prosecuting those who committed it. As chapter followed chapter, I began to feel revulsion for the prosecutors - and also many of their victims, who were often prominent business people and politicians. In a typical case, an ambitious attorney general who wishes to boost his own political career (or that of some associate) sets his sights on a well-known politician and decides to bring him down in any way he can. To do so, he takes advantage of deliberately woolly laws enacted by Congress, popular prejudice against the rich and successful, and general paranoia about crime, dishonesty or even terrorism. After methodical planning, some "small fry" are arrested and threatened with a towering wave of criminal charges. Some of them plea bargain, and are then recruited to give evidence against the next layer - typically their bosses. And so it goes, until the prosecutorial inquisition reaches the person at the top - the mayor, CEO, governor, or whoever it might be. (Admittedly, this approach is sometimes justified: it was just thus that the case against President Richard Nixon was built). First I found myself imagining some tropical ocean scene, with sharks, barracuda, killer whales, giant squid and other carnivorous monsters circling viciously, tearing at one another until the water fills with blood. Later, I saw parallels with the Spanish Inquisition - in which informers made a good living out of denouncing harmless victims, who were tortured until they denounced others, who were then tortured... with the state and the informers dividing the rich proceeds.

Starting with an Introduction in which he sets the scene, Silverglate moves on to chapter 1 which deals with the prosecutions of four prominent local politicians: Raul Martinez, mayor of Hialeah in Florida; Kevin White, mayor of Boston; Alabama Governor Don Siegelman; and former Massachusetts House of Representatives Speaker Thomas Finneran. In passing, he mentions that between 2001 and 2007 the Department of Justice (DoJ) opened investigations into seven times more Democratic public officials than Republicans. The odds of this happening by random chance are less than 1 in 10,000. Chapter 2 deals with the delicate issue of regulating the prescription of narcotic drugs by doctors. As part of the federal "war on drugs", the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has acquired a frightening array of legal powers, which have deterred doctors from prescribing adequate pain-killing medication to the dying, sufferers from cancer, and others who need them. Silverglate outlines the case of Dr Hurwitz, who was imprisoned for 57 months because some of his patients had lied to him to obtain more narcotics than they really needed. Among other things, he notes that fewer than half of those suffering frequent pain get enough relief after seeing a doctor - and that as many as 16,500 Americans bleed to death each year because they have been forced to resort to anti-inflammatory drugs instead of narcotics. Chapter 3 turns to the pursuit of companies marketing medical devices and drugs, pointing out the impossibility of getting a jury (and sometimes, even a judge) to understand the impenetrable thicket of regulations imposed by the Food And Drug Administration (FDA). Corporations usually do whatever prosecutors ask of them - including pleading guilty to any and all charges - because the FDA can debar them from doing business, effectively destroying them.

In chapter 4 Silverglate moves into more contentious territory, tenaciously defending the disgraced financial wizard Michael Milken whose income soared to over $500 million a year in 1987. Contrary to popular opinion (shaped by mass media happy to follow the government line), he maintains that Milken did nothing illegal - although his meteoric success and unorthodox methods upset many establishment figures. The lead prosecutor in this case was Rudy Giuliani who - on the back of this and other famous cases - later became mayor of New York. Although Milken agreed to plead guilty to six felony counts and pay $600 million - to protect his brother Lowell, according to Silverglate - University of Chicago Law Dean Daniel Fischel later determined that all of the six counts to which Milken pleaded guilty "described perfectly lawful transactions"! Chapter 4 also details the prosecutions of CSFB employees, Martha Stewart, and Enron employees such as Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling. While admitting that Enron grossly exaggerated its financial health and prospects, Silverglate alleges that the specific charges brought against it did not hold water, and that the information it supposedly kept secret had in fact been openly published. In chapter 5, he shows how the technique of "starting at the bottom" by inducing junior employees to plea bargain was extended to the corporate level - for instance, how the case against Enron was developed by forcing its auditor Arthur Andersen to cop a "corporate plea bargain" that brought it solidly into the prosecuting camp (and wiped it out as a business entity). Remarkably, it turns out that auditing and accountancy firms can easily be brought to heel by the DoJ, as merely being indicted in a criminal case would be enough to put them permanently out of business.

Chapter 6 recounts how the DoJ took on the American Bar Association (ABA) - the biggest lawyers' organization in the USA, with over 400,000 members. As an appetizer, Silverglate describes the unenviable dilemma of attorney Philip Russell, who found that the local church (a legal client of his) owned a laptop on which one of its employees had stored child pornography. Such "contraband" is always illegal to possess, and there is no defence. Yet Russell could not turn the laptop in to police without betraying the confidence he owed to his client, the church - which in any case had done nothing wrong. So Russell destroyed the laptop. Unfortunately for him, the feds were already on the case and successfully prosecuted him for destroying evidence! Chapter 7 finally gets round to tackling the legal predicament of the media, which - especially since 2001 - has risked being accused of espionage or the like if it publishes material embarrassing to the authorities. And chapter 8 is memorably entitled "National Security: Protecting the Nation from Merchants, Artists, Profesors, Students and Lobbyists for Non-Profits?"

In his Conclusion, Silverglate makes some uncontroversial and reasonable suggestions. He begins in ringing tones: "Creativity and inventiveness are honored and valued in many areas of life. Crafting innovative legal theories to ground criminal prosecutions should not be one of them". He insists that the law should be clear and easily understood, and that citizens should always be able to know whether a given act is legal or illegal so that they can be sure of staying on the right side of the law at all times. What Congress may have intended is quite immaterial: the letter of the law should be what counts. For "...all the procedural rights in the world," he notes, "are for nought if the defendant is unable to understand what it is for which he or she stands indicted".

Three Felonies A Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent
By Michael A. Fox
Harvey Silverglate does an extraordinary job analyzing the erosion of rights and the risks it carries to liberty in America in his book, Three Felonies a Day, How the Feds Target the Innocent.

This book is a must read for anyone who cares about the preservation of liberty and putting a check on the encroachment of the federal government in the every day lives of citizens.

He shows how the Department of Justice has led a steady march to expand their reach into the lives of ordinary Americans. The result? Panoply of laws giving them the right to prosecute just about anyone for anything at will.

Their broad application of the Deprivation of Honest Services Statutes in White Collar Crime and a host of other legal gymnastics give them a club every bit as powerful as the Soviet Union at the height of its power. In the Soviet Union and other dictatorships the tools of federalization of all crimes and trampling liberties usually reside in what is commonly called "Defamation Statutes."

Mr. Silverglate identifies numerous laws and Department of Justice interpretations and applications that give them authority rivaling the Soviet Union in its heyday. This boils down to a scandalous use of the federal instruments of powers residing in the executive branch at the Department of Justice that go unchecked.

For anyone who cares about liberty I recommend this book. It is makes a powerful contribution to the cause of justice and freedom and ranks as a modern day call to action equal to Thomas Paine's pamphlet, Common Sense published in 1776.

Mr. Siverglate brings current day threats to our liberties into focus just as Mr. Paine brought the need for the American Revolution into focus in 1776. For Mr. Paine liberty and freedom's enemy resided in King George of England; to Mr. Silverglate it can be found in a runaway Department of Justice intent on expanding its power to intrude and reach into the life of every American.

a lucid and powerful indictment of federal criminal law enforcement
By Malick Ghachem
This is a very thoughtful and vigorously argued book about the injustices that arise when prosecutors seek to expand the reach of federal criminal statutes beyond their proper field of application. The author has litigated many of the cases he discusses, and is able to translate the complexities of that experience intelligently and without condescension, but also without all of the unnecessary technical details that lawyers writing for a general audience sometimes get bogged down in. Harvey Silverglate is an institution in his own right: a tireless advocate for civil liberties, prolific writer, and astute student of the law, there are few people who have a stronger commitment to illuminating the practical workings of the criminal justice system and their relationship to broader currents in the law. This is a must-read for those interested in criminal law, civil liberties, and the recent history of the Department of Justice, by a writer who has the courage of his convictions and voices them powerfully and well.

This popular and comprehensive anthology presents cogent, provocative articles from differing political perspectives on major issues in post-War America. In addition to articles by leading historians, the editors have assembled first-person accounts of various issues by those who have contributed to the shaping of America's rich history, including Joseph McCarthy, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bill Clinton. This fifth edition has been considerably revised to incorporate up-to-date articles on the most significant issues facing contemporary America, including essays on affirmative action, Generation X, and the crises of post-Cold War foreign policy. With lively and enlightening introductions to each section and headnotes providing a context for the articles, A History of Our Time helps students make sense of the past fifty years in America's sometimes tumultuous but always fascinating history.

In this anthology, Chafe and Sitkoff have collected a number of articles that are critical in understanding the major issues in American history during the past 50 years. Despite the broad thematic scope of essays--ranging from post-war foreign policy to the creation of an "urban underclass" during the Reagan administration--the organization and careful editing of the book provide the reader with a clear understanding of America's recent sociopolitical transitions. The lucid and well-written individual essays, submitted by leading historians and well-known political figures, work particularly well alongside the documents and commentaries they are paired with.

Wearable Robots: Biomechatronic Exoskeletons, by José L. Pons

A wearable robot is a mechatronic system that is designed around the shape and function of the human body, with segments and joints corresponding to those of the person it is externally coupled with. Teleoperation and power amplification were the first applications, but after recent technological advances the range of application fields has widened. Increasing recognition from the scientific community means that this technology is now employed in telemanipulation, man-amplification, neuromotor control research and rehabilitation, and to assist with impaired human motor control.

Logical in structure and original in its global orientation, this volume gives a full overview of wearable robotics, providing the reader with a complete understanding of the key applications and technologies suitable for its development. The main topics are demonstrated through two detailed case studies; one on a lower limb active orthosis for a human leg, and one on a wearable robot that suppresses upper limb tremor. These examples highlight the difficulties and potentialities in this area of technology, illustrating how design decisions should be made based on these.

As well as discussing the cognitive interaction between human and robot, this comprehensive text also covers:

  • the mechanics of the wearable robot and it’s biomechanical interaction with the user, including state-of-the-art technologies that enable sensory and motor interaction between human (biological) and wearable artificial (mechatronic) systems;
  • the basis for bioinspiration and biomimetism, general rules for the development of biologically-inspired designs, and how these could serve recursively as biological models to explain biological systems;
  • the study on the development of networks for wearable robotics.

Wearable Robotics: Biomechatronic Exoskeletons will appeal to lecturers, senior undergraduate students, postgraduates and other researchers of medical, electrical and bio engineering who are interested in the area of assistive robotics. Active system developers in this sector of the engineering industry will also find it an informative and welcome resource.
