Leo is a fabulous writer.

My mother turned me on to Leo. She thought that, since I'm a therapist, I would appreciate his human-first perspective. I absolutely loved this book. I enjoy Leo's anecdotes and his compassion. I would highly recommend this book and his lectures on youtube to anyone interested.

Excellent for self-study

I am using Contacts, 7th ed., along with the workbook/lab manual. I also purchased the CD set, which contained 14 CD's with about 40 minutes on each. I have enjoyed these materials immensely. Since I am studying on my own, the CDs have been a key part of my training. This book covers the equivalent of two semesters of college French. The pages are colorful, with many descriptions of contemporary French life. For those who are using it in a classroom setting, many of the exercises creatively get partners to have dialogues. I highly recommend it for self-study, study with a partner or in a classroom.

Not what you think your getting--Check carefully!!

If you are purchasing this for a class, I highly recommend that you purchase the package from the schools bookstore. I tried to purchase all of the "parts" on amazon and because the discriptions are sketchy I ended up spending more trying to get all that I needed for the class than I would have. For instance they split the CD that normally comes with the book seperatly, and they split the SAM CDs from the student manual. When the SAM CDs arrived they had been opened and were missing half the CD's (ordered from Amazon), although Amazon is fixing it with no fuss, the shipping time means that I will not have the CD's in time for class, and I have to HOPE the next ones they send are complete!

I have this book in a beginning college level French class. The book is excellent. Use of the lab manual and cassette tapes is a must with this test. The lab manual and the cassette tapes compliment the text and makes a difficult subject fun.

The Best Book Ever on Weightlifting and Training

If you are familiar with Wendler's other book 531, and like it, then this is an absolute requirement to purchase. I have read through my copy of Beyond 531 about 4 times now, taking notes, and it contains tons of new info and new variations to training. It's almost like Wendler just said screw it and poured all his training knowledge into this one book. Essentially what you get are unlimited new spin-offs to the original 531 program. For example if you want to use more volume, there is a plan. More singles, there is a plan. Higher frequency, there is a plan. Peaking for a meet or increasing strength, there is a plan. He even includes a program in the works called Beyond 531, which is very interesting. Particularly I found the most useful bits to be what he refers to as the Last Set First, Joker Sets, and Spinal Tap Training to be the best parts of the new book. He also lays out a 28 week training block where you manipulate the classic Boring But Big plan from 10 rep sets all the way down to singles.

So if you haven't purchased 531 yet, I would say start there. This book is a completely new addition to his methods and doesn't really explain the original 531 book, since his first book did. Rather this book provides tons of new options and ways to modify one's own program to fit their needs/schedule/training goals. The best way I can explain it, is it's like if your favorite band released 100 songs all at once, instead of narrowing it down to a 12 song cd. He puts it all out there and lets you decide what is useful and what is not for your training. What's funny is that ever since about 2 years ago when I started following the 531 plan, people have asking me what I do in the gym or what complex lifting program I follow! I have even been accused by friends, of using steroids because of the mass/strength you can build with this plan. Little do they know about 80% of my work is just different rep/set variations of the squat, bench, deadlift and military press all thanks to Wendler! Highly recommended.

5,3,1 Bible but proceed with caution

I have been training with the 5 3 1 program for about 3 years. I'm pretty familiar with it and was excited to see what else Wendler had cooked up. Basically he has given us a wealth of info, variations and programs. Really it starts to be overwhelming. That isn't a bad thing. This book contains all the programs that you will probably ever need in your lifetime. Two things that stand out to me for those people who may have read his earlier book are the Joker sets and the elimination of the four week D load cycle. The Joker sets are great way to Go hard when you're having a good day.
As good as this new book is and as glad as I am that Wendler decided to write it I can't help but worry that some people won't use it appropriately. This book is about a formulaic approach to trying to get the most out of your body that's good but you cannot forget the basics. If you're a beginner don't read this book-- it will not help you. You'll get all excited about all the different program variations and you're going to lose track of what is really important. Instead, buy the original 531 book, get strong, learn your body, and then when you've developed read this book.

Good Material but Extremely Disorganised

This book is loaded with templates -- 70% of the book consists of variational templates, unfortunately Jim does a very bad job at organizing this wealth of information.

I find myself constantly re-reading sections and looking at the contents page as I never know when I've stumbled upon a different section of a book (they are mostly just separated by paragraphs without making it known when moving on to a new topic).

This book works on the foundation of the popular 5/3/1 and adds a LOT of variation to everything, with that being said I'd only recommend this book to an advanced trainee who has read the previous 5/3/1 book.

In summary, this book definitely needs a v2.0 just for the sake of organization. It is a massive pain to have to sift through and re-read again just to ensure the information you just read does not pertain to a new topic.

What did a "coffee table book" look like in 1911?

"The Book of Baseball" answers the question posed above. It is the first large-format, heavily-illustrated book to be published about baseball. It takes an encyclopedic approach to its subject; beginning with the origins of the game on the fields in New York to the game's spread during and after the Civil War to the development of Major League Baseball to the current state of the game in 1911. It is an enticing trip, offering insight into what fans of baseball in 1911 thought was important and necessary to understand about the game.

Organized topically, with some attention to chronology, "The Book of Baseball" includes an origins story in which Abner Doubleday does not appear but the game of rounders, the Knickerbockers club, and the rise of a professional aspect to baseball does. It also contains chapters on the history the National League, the American League, the 1910 season, the art of pitching, star players, building a championship team, umpiring, pennant races and what contributes to winning them (in 1911 as is still the case that comes down to money to hire the best players), the structure of the minor leagues, and expectations for the 1911 season.

This book was released in the spring of 1911 and served not only as a history of the game to this point, but also an analysis of the state of each of the teams in the National and American Leagues and their prospects for the pennant races. The scouting reports on each team are interesting. The Philadelphia Athletics, World Series champions in 1910, looked set to repeat but there were some good challengers. They did, of course, win another World Series in 1911. In the National League the Chicago Cubs looks strong, but so did the New York Giants, and it was John McGraw's Giants that took the NL pennant and lost to the Athletics in six games in the World Series.

This is a treasure of a reprint. "The Book of Baseball" gives an unparalleled glimpse into baseball in 1911, in the middle of what is now referred to as a "Deadball" era in which pitching, defense, and the art of the one-run game was honed to a fine sharpness.

About the Author
Ann Scheck McAlearney, Sc.D., is an Assistant Professor on the Ohio State University faculty in Health Services Management and Policy. She holds Bachelor's degrees in Biological Sciences and English from Stanford University, a Master's degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University and a Doctorate in Health Policy and Management from Harvard University. Professor McAlearney teaches courses in Health Services Organizational Management, Strategic Management and Program Development, and Leadership in Health Care.

Dr. McAlearney's general research interests include the areas of outcomes research, population health management, and examining organizational and physician decision-making in the area of care management. Her publications cover areas such as access to care, satisfaction with care, disease management and population health management, information technology, cost-effectiveness of new technologies, and quality measurement. She is especially interested in how health services research findings are applied in health care organizations and how the reporting of health care outcomes and quality measures can be used to improve both care delivery and health care decision-making by consumers.

It is very well written and the author's opinion is backed by research from several different institutions. This book presents the problem of Disease Management and Population Health Management as a method of trying to control our escalating health care costs and assist the aging population and those with chronic medical problems.

This was a required textbook, and honestly after paying 80-something, I expected a bigger heavier text, but this book is well written, with succinct chapters, and it covers everything you need to know about Disease Mgmnt, Population Health, ROI, Wellness programs, how to design and evaluate a program, etc.

About the Author
Aurora Rey grew up in a small town in south Louisiana, daydreaming about New England. She keeps a special place in her heart for the South, especially the food and the ways women are raised to be strong, even if they’re taught not to show it. After a brief dalliance with biochemistry, she completed both a B.A. and an M.A. in English.

When she’s not writing or at her day job in higher education, she moonlights as a baker and is slightly addicted to Pinterest. She loves to cook and dreams of a big farmhouse in the country with a garden and some goats. She lives in Ithaca, New York, with her partner and two dogs.

You wont' be able to put it down!

I absolutely love this book and have not been able to put it down since I got it! This is the story of Lia and Alex and the beautifully romantic and sexy tale of a winter in Provincetown, a seaside holiday haven. A collection of interesting characters, well-fleshed out as well as a gorgeous setting make for a great read.

The writing is wonderfully descriptive, making it easy for the reader to imagine the setting and why Lia became captivated by it. I want to go there! I love the character of Lia as she was pretty adorable, naive and vulnerable. I was rooting for her and Alex to make it all through the book and the build up of tension was palpable. The steamy scenes were very hot indeed and extremely effective. This lady knows how to tantalize the reader!

The looming spectre of the awful ex, Dani, upped the tension a notch or two. I so wanted Lia to be strong! Alex has a past to be reckoned with too, as various women from the past pop up and rumors reach Lia's ears.

This is a terrific read and thoroughly deserves 5 Stars.

Really Good Debut Novel from Author (at least I think it's her debut novel...)

I think this is the debut novel by this author and I have to say that is was a good one. The synopsis of the book is fairly accurate and the two main characters are easy to fall in love with. The story has a nice build and a nice steady romance that is far from perfect. The supporting cast was just that, a supporting cast. The author did a great job of staying focused on the two main characters and having other characters add to the dimension of the two leads.

One thing that did drive me a little nuts is the lack of description of characters. The author did get around to it vaguely and it was through out the book. So, for half the book I was left wondering what the characters really looked like...so let me help you out if you're one that kinda needs that information. I think both women are in their early to mid 30's. They are about 5'8" in height. Alex is "butch" with broad shoulders and green eyes. Lia is "femme" with dark hair, i think dark eyes, and a pale complexion. Regardless, the book was a good one and one that I recommend. I look forward to future books by this author.

I fell for the characters

I really, really liked these women. Before I was a third of the way through the book, I was glad I was reading romance and pretty well knew they'd end up together. There isn't a ton of conflict, but I can deal with that better than conflict that feels forced. And the sex is hot, real and hungry.

Also the writing was good, solid work that never got in my way or distracted me. I can enjoy a lovely phrase, but writing that feels labored is laborious to read. This is not that book. So yeah, I recommend it.
