Can't wait for more!

This series is KILLING me!
This is book 4 in the Mind Dimension series, if you are reading this book first, you will not understand what is going on.
I now know about the Enlightened and I was surprised to see how their lives are all intertwined with the Elders. I really want to know more about a few of the storylines that have been given to me. I love how authors give you bits and pieces to keep you wanting for more. This story has done just that, I need more.
Darren has become a driving force for information. He is uncovering more and more about himself and his abilities. In the last book, he has found a new state and ability to freeze time while in a dimension of frozen time. As I thought that was super cool when I read it, I find his ability and lack of ability more intriguing in this story. I have a need to know more about where he comes from and I am dying to know where it will go from here. I can't wait for more in this series.

A conspiracy, non-stop action, plots to grab power, secrets held and secrets revealed.

The Elders by Dima Zales is the fourth book in the five book Mind Dimension series, and the action is non-stop. At the end of the last book, The Enlightened, Darren has learned more about his real family that’s been hidden from him for his entire life.

He has found out who his birth parents were, and how he came to be raised by his two moms. He has been to the the compound of The Enlightened and met their leaders, some of whom had roles in his family’s past and his journey of discovery. And he has traveled a long way down the path of finding the ultimate enemy, The Super Pusher, who has been plotting against his family and loved ones all these years, and is responsible for several of their deaths.

At the beginning of this book, Darren and his family are attending the funeral of a person close to them who has turned out to be the architect of years of secrets and deceit. His two moms and friends are then kidnapped by the Enlightened in an attempt to force Darren to give in to their plan for domination.

From there, is in a mad race to find out the agenda of the Elders, their society, and their history with the Enlightened. He has to depend on his friends for aid, and extricate his friends when the plot turns against them. He may also have an important place in the future of both of these communities.

Darren is learning more about the society of the Elders, and various powers that he might be able to perfect, such as teleporting out of the Quiet to a specific location. Once again he works on being able to reach Level 2, the dimension that he can enter by phasing into the Quiet when he is already in the Quiet. This ability holds the key to a greater understanding of the society of the Mind Dimension.

As this series barrels down to the final act, Dima Zales has once again upped the tension and action level for Darren and his friends and family. This book is a solid addition to the series, and should not be skipped.

Lots happening in this book and lots of answers too!

Even at a funeral a lot happens. Mira is kidnapped along with Darren's two moms. The whole book is about Darren trying to save Mira from certain death. Darren get help from his friends and ends up in deep trouble when the Super Pusher turns guides his friends and then everyone is out to kill him.

He has to enter Level 2 to take care of things and save everyone. Mimir shows up again to advise since he really can't help out. A new entity appears as well called Daleb. Together these two beings help Darren make decisions that eventually lead him out of the whole mess. But at what cost?

He gets Eugene's help and what they are going to do will likely leave Darren inert forever. But he has to risk it for Mira.

There are twists and turns and you get to see him solve the mystery of who the Super Pusher is. You will be surprised.

After all of that action, Darren still has to tell his mother about her past that she can't remember. That is intense and you can't put the book down. You just have to keep reading.
I can't wait until book 5. It seems as if the series could have ended right here. It will be interesting to see what Dima Zales has in store for us next.

Very useful and intelligently written

I found this book to be very helpful when repairing top break replicas, Colts (single and double action), and percussion revolvers. He also covers lever action rifles extensively although I have not personally used that section.

Gunsmiths these days are hard to find, so a lot of us have to do it ourselves. The author thankfully covers a lot of important and common problems I have faced, so that I didn't have to go on a usually futile search for a gunsmith. Mr. Chicoine is obviously an experienced and intelligent man, and he writes clearly. Plenty of illustrations guide you through the repairs he describes.

Does he cover every possible conceivable problem? Every firearm? Of course not. Who could? For the money I recommend it. It has saved me more than the purchase price already.

A Nice Addition to Your Gun Book Library

I would like to preface my review by saying that I am not a gunsmith and do not plan to become one. Like the author, I grew up watching TV westerns and developed an early fascination for these guns. I enjoy reading about them, looking at them, studying how they operate, and learning what to look for when evaluating a potential purchase.
In a nutshell, I would say that this book is definitely worth the money I paid for it. It should give me hours of educational reading pleasure and will be a valuable addition to my collection of gun books.
The author devotes about the first hundred pages of the book to topics including gunsmithing tools, types of metal finishes, headspacing, sear engagement angles, repairing and making screws and pins, the issue of restoration of antique guns, and general gunsmithing repairs. I plan to thoroughly read these informative sections.
If you are interested in gunsmithing 19th century handguns and their replicas, this is the book for you. The author devotes 176 pages to the operation, takedown, and repair of handguns. In my opinion, a better title for the book would be, "Gunsmithing Guns of the Old West, Volume 1: Pistols."
Readers interested in the gunsmithing of rifles and shotguns aren't as fortunate. The author devotes 46 pages to rifles and 11 pages to shotguns. However, except for 9 pages discussing the operation and repair of the toggle link mechanism of the '73 Winchester (which by itself could be worth the purchase price of the book), and a paragraph for the '92, there are only takedown instructions for a variety of antique rifles and 3 shotguns, along with parts diagrams borrowed from other publications. The author doesn't include sequences of clear photographs like in Gun Digest's series of takedown books.
When I think of guns of the old west, the first thing that comes to mind is a lever action Winchester rifle. So I expected information on troubleshooting and repairing common problems on the popular Winchester lever actions such as the '86 and '94, the Marlin lever actions, and the Colt Lightning slide action rifles. It would be nice to read about typical problems encountered with these guns, what the novice should attempt to fix, and what problems should be referred to a professional gunsmith.
With the popularity of the Winchester Model 1897 shotgun in cowboy action shooting, I expected to see a section devoted to this fine old gun. Again, nothing except for takedown instructions is included. Readers interested in the '97 would be better off purchasing a copy of "Gunsmithing Shotguns" by Patrick Sweeney.
In conclusion, I like the book and am glad I purchased it. I would look forward to purchasing a sequel to it that focuses more on gunsmithing rifles and shotguns of the old west.

An excellent book on gunsmithing for CAS shooters

This is a book that belongs in the library of everyone who is involved in Cowboy Action Shooting®, whether they intend to work on their own guns or not. The author, a veteran gunsmith, covers basic and advanced gunsmithing, up to and including full restoration of antique firearms.
It is a formidable book, in some ways. Certainly, the average cowboy shooter isn't going to have the tools or the skills to perform every operation in the book. Nevertheless, the author gives the reader plenty of insight into what is entailed in taking care of these weapons. If anything, the book will help the amateur gunsmith realize when he is in over his head!
He starts with history of the firearms, and the importance of proper safety, especially concerning the danger of using smokeless powder in antique weapons that are not designed to handle it.
He discusses the metals used and their finishes. He covers taking care of damaged screws -- a real bugaboo on antique weapons. He shows how to avoid damaging them, also. His coverage of stock repairs is noteworthy.
The book covers all types of firearms that are commonly used in Cowboy Action Shooting®, from cap and ball revolvers to modern Ruger wheelguns, the Henry rifle to the modern Rossi leverguns, and the double barrelled shotgun to the Winchester model 97. It even covers most of the reproduction firearms commonly in use in the sport.
Many of the guns in the book are not permitted in competition, such as the double action Colts and Smith and Wessons. However, it is good to have information on servicing them available.
The explanations are clear and logical. The drawings will give you much of the information needed to perform repairs properly.
The only major glitch, and I am sure that it will be taken care of in the next printing, is that the drawing on page 127 is numbered incorrectly. It won't take you long to figure out what is what, but if you wish, Krause publications will send you a copy of the corrected page at your request.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage ...

I am a high school teacher and this was the first "No Fear" play I've used for my English classes. Before this, I used the Folger editions. To be honest, I felt like having the students use this version was a disadvantage because they were no longer learning how to read Shakespearean language. While this does provide convenient translations--students start relying too heavily on them. In addition, the translations don't always translate every word/line; it's mostly a translation of the general meaning. Thus, again, students are not learning to really decipher the language. The Folger versions, on the other hand, give translations for specific words that students then have to plug in in order to understand the actual Shakespearean language. I'm switching back to Folgers next year. However, I'd still say that this would be fine as a companion piece for students to check their understanding, but I wouldn't use this as the only text.

Excellent critical text with helpful notes

I've been teaching Hamlet using this text for about two years (four semesters) to college freshmen/sophomores in a general composition/literature class. The Ignatius edition is the best that I've used (and I've used several); I put it slightly ahead of the Folger edition. (The Folger edition does have the advantage that it includes plot summaries of scenes -- very helpful to beginning Shakespeare readers -- which the Ignatius lacks.)

The essays that are included are solid and insightful. They are particularly helpful in helping readers understand the Christian context of the play. Regardless of whether or not the reader is Christian, it's necessary to understand Christian ideas about sin, repentance, and justice in order to grasp the nuances of the play. When students are encouraged to really think deeply about these topics, they end up making connections between the events of the play and the events of their own lives -- for instance, about the struggle between desire ("I want what I want" -- just like Claudius) and reason ("I want to do what is right -- but how do I figure out what that is?" -- like Hamlet). This edition has been the most useful for me in terms of helping my students to do this kind of deep thinking.

On a practical level, I like the editor's choices about what words to gloss; to any adult reader who has read a lot of Shakespeare and other classic authors, the vocabulary glosses may seem like overkill, but it has been my experience that my 18-22-year-old students need and benefit from them.

It is helpful that the glosses are footnoted rather than end- or side-noted; this makes it easier to find them if you need them, while not being too intrusive if you don't. Visually, it's an attractive edition with plenty of white space -- important for taking marginal notes! - and the full names of characters spelled out.

Obstetrics and Gynecology: A History and Iconography is the third revised edition of Iconographia Gyniatrica, a comprehensive attempt to tell the history of obstetrics and gynecology through pictures. With more than 1000 illustrations on female anatomy, embryology, midwifery, labor, cesarean delivery, obstetrical instruments, breast-feeding, contraception, and obstetric and gynecologic books, it provides a spectacular report on the medical history of obstetrics and gynecology that could hardly be told just verbally. Every page of this book has something interesting to say and to show. (Figure) Obstetrics in its broadest sense encompasses the entire life cycle, from the creation of a new person to his or her birth. Today the diagnosis of pregnancy is simple and straightforward. However, this was not always the case, as shown in chapter 2: "If the veins within her arm beat against thy hand, thou shalt say: she is pregnant (Brugsh Papyrus, 1350 B.C.)." We travel in time from this Egyptian method of pregnancy diagnosis to the medieval introduction of uroscopy, to the 19th-century French usage of a test called the Kyesteine pellicle, and to the method, announced in 1928, devised by Aschheim and Zondek. Until the 19th century, medicine was divided into three parts -- medicine, surgery, and obstetrics -- with obstetrics being perhaps the oldest branch. That is why it is not surprising to find representations of birth in the crude cave drawings of the ice age (chapter 4). The illustrations of scenes of birth from various nations throughout the centuries are perhaps the most impressive part of the book. Many ancient myths and legends are associated with obstetrics and gynecology. The birth of many heroes and gods are related to the "unnatural" form of birth by cesarean section. This is because the outcome of cesarean section was so poor in ancient and medieval times that if a newborn sustained the operation, it was believed that the gods must have intended an outstanding future for this person. Some examples of such persons in the book are Asclepius (the Greek god of medicine), Julius Caesar, Buddha, Adonis (a Greek hero), and Rustan (a legendary Persian hero). In chapter 11, there are stories and reproductions of many miniatures, woodcuts, reliefs, and paintings depicting these events. Deviations from normal human forms at birth intrigued scientists, artists, and ordinary people for centuries. In chapter 14, there are stories about and illustrations of cyclopia (one eye), sympodia (fusion of the lower limbs), janiceps (conjoined faces), acormia (a head without a trunk), phocomelia (absence of the proximal segments of the limbs), and other birth defects. Many fascinating ancient and historical gynecologic instruments are presented in chapter 17. It is humbling to discover that many of the procedures and instruments that we believe to have been invented in recent decades were actually described centuries ago. In the 1967 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, under the history of medicine and surgery, is this description: "The history of medicine is not a branch of medicine; it is medicine itself. Here is no mere antiquarian pursuit or hobby for elderly or retired doctors. Medical history . . . and its study enables one to recapture in some degree the broad outlook of the early days, when a physician was also a philosopher [, and] . . . reinstate the patient to the position he ought to hold; i.e., that of the central figure. Thus, properly viewed, the history of medicine becomes the very basis of medical education." I sincerely believe that this is precisely why Obstetrics and Gynecology should find its place on the shelf of every modern obstetrician and gynecologist, as well as with anyone interested in the medical or cultural history of women's health. The illustrations are magnificent, and this history fascinating. However, the bood was quite dirty when it arrived, like it had been covered in dust in a warehouse. I was able to take a cloth to clean it up, and that worked 90%

About the Author
Mark J. Smith is Lecturer in Social Sciences at the Open University. He previously taught at the University of Sussex and has held Visiting Lectureships in Social Theory at Queen's University (Canada) and Cultural and Critical Theory at the University of Brighton. He teaches and researches in the philosophy of the social sciences, ecology, social and political theory, cultural politics, critical theory and sociology. This is a very substantive, well organized, and informative book. The articles provided come from some of the world's leaders in this vital area of speaker classification, and related forensic and automatic processing topics. Some presentations are useful, if not fully evidentiary or complete, presentations of how or why voices can be identified or classified based on the acoustic and linguistic aspects of the spoken communications. While somewhat weak on the extensive historical work on what speaker or channel distortions or variabilities can be handled to reliably provide forensically solid evidence, this work provides a valuable single-volume source for a variety of reviews of automatic speaker classification and some aspects of the aural-perceptual (human-expert) methods of analysis. Apparently a second volume is planned, hopefully to provide some guidance about additional research and development needs, and practical steps in using these tools for forensic or other practical applications.
